4 Ways Scripture Reveals That the Holy Spirit Is God

1. Christians are a temple for the Holy Spirit.

Temples are holy places for God to dwell. In the Old Testament, God dwelt in the temple at Jerusalem; but in the New Testament, God dwells in Christians, his church.

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. (Eph. 2:19–22)

2. The Holy Spirit shares in the saving work of God.

God alone has the power to save people from sin and death. The Holy Spirit is active in salvation. He is the one who gives new life.

If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. (Rom. 8:11)

3. The Holy Spirit receives worship due to God alone.

People are called to worship God alone. The Holy Spirit is the proper recipient of worship in many places in the New Testament.

In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. (Eph. 1:13–14)

4. The Holy Spirit shares the names of God.

In many places, the names of God are applied to the Holy Spirit. Occasionally, we even find the apostles directly referring to the Holy Spirit as “God.”

But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.” (Acts 5:3–4)
