1. Realize that God is merciful.
God the Father demonstrated his mercy by sending Jesus Christ (God the Son) to die for the sins of the world.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. (John 3:16–17)
2. Believe that God offers salvation to anyone who would believe.
God offers salvation to sinners. To qualify, you must believe what God says about Jesus and the world’s need.
Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. (John 5:24)
3. Repent and trust daily.
We must personally trust Christ for salvation. You must keep all three steps in mind. To focus on step 3 without 1 and 2 leaves you with no confidence. Steps 1 and 2 without 3 leave you wondering if salvation is for you personally. As you repent and trust in Christ daily, your confidence in God to save will grow.
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. (Phil. 2:12–13)
